The second time I was called ‘the lone wolf’ was in a summer evening, about 7 years ago…
As head of marketing of a big corporation, after an exciting sales conference in which, absorbed by the crowd’s reaction to my speech about the new offers, I exceeded my time on the stage by 10 minutes. In the backstage I found myself cornered by my team angry that I had eaten up time from the others! They were forced to shorten the other speeches. It did not matter that the crowd was excited, ready to go for the next sales season.
At first, I was shocked!!! I could not understand what they meant. I thought to myself:
'Are they out of their minds?'
I was still dizzy from the stage adrenalin from sales guys cheering. What I had done on the stage was not for me. It all was for the sales guys. It was their event and they were hyped!
The cold ice line came from my boss - ‘You act like a lone wolf! You just don’t see!’
That line touched me, as it was the second time I heard it.
I played back several times the event, the speech on the stage, the other times when I was taking the lead in the name of the mission, but completely losing sight of the others in my team, being convinced that I was helping the team move forward. And there was some truth in this, but that way, I was not using the real potential of the team - always much, much bigger!
Such moments led to my AHA : ‘The lone wolf’ can never reach far, unless the wolf pack is around.
Now, back to you - the creator (entrepreneur):
Once you decided on the mission to embark on, you need to find your ‘wolves’ that you need in your pack, to help you - trail the right path, to smell the shortest cuts to take. The wolves that have the same curiosity about the mission as you, and are able to complement you on the road!
